NIPSCO Electric Pole Upgrade/Replacement

Beginning in April and running through October, NIPSCO will be replacing and upgrading 7 miles of electric lines and 247 electric poles in and around Long Beach, Shoreland Hills, Duneland Beach and portions of the surrounding Michigan City area. Work will occur between 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. CT, M-F, with some work as needed on weekends. As crews move across the various locations around Town, there may be single lane closures, and in some cases both lane closures with no through traffic. Flaggers and signage will be posted where work is occurring. Below is a tentative snapshot of an estimated timeline, which is subject to change based on weather and other factors:

  • April 1 – Project Begins
  • Early April – Work on portions of US 12 (2-3 weeks)
  • Prior to Memorial Day – Lakeshore Drive from East to West (expected to include lane closures in both directions for small sections at a time; no through traffic, but residents will have ingress and egress access)
  • Mid-June – Michiana Drive (2-3 weeks)
  • By Mid-July – El Portal Drive
  • By End of July – Old Grand Beach Rd
  • August – Oriole Trail (may include lane closures in both directions for brief periods of time)
  • September – Moore Rd
  • October – Expected completion for remaining portions of Town
